Remove deep scratches from window glass – our tips

Deep scratches in window glass are not just a visual blemish. They also impair the function and aesthetics of the window. Such damage can be caused by various factors such as mechanical impact, incorrect cleaning or the effects of the weather.

In this comprehensive blog post, you will learn various methods for removing deep scratches from window glass. You will also receive valuable tips on prevention and care to keep your windows looking good for a long time.

Causes of deep scratches in window glass

Deep scratches in window glass often occur when objects such as tools or toys are thrown against the pane. Weather influences such as sandstorms can also cause deep scratches. Especially when small particles hit the glass at high speed.

Improper cleaning, for example with abrasive cleaning agents or coarse cloths, also contributes to the formation of scratches. Such damage can also occur during transport or installation if the glass is not adequately protected.

Mechanical damage can occur through everyday use. For example, by moving furniture close to the windows or by pets scratching the panes.

Remove glass scratches

Depending on the depth of the scratches in the glass, they can be easily removed with household remedies. These include toothpaste, baking soda or baking powder. Other effective agents are special glass polishes or polishes for glass-ceramics.

Before the actual treatment, you should clean the window glass thoroughly. Use suitable cleaning agents that do not contain abrasive particles. Lint-free cloths and microfibre cloths are recommended to remove all residues.

Wear safety goggles and gloves to protect yourself from possible injury. Test the selected methods on inconspicuous areas. This way you can be sure that they are suitable for your glass and will not cause any further damage.

DIY methods for removing deep scratches

Toothpaste and chalk

Toothpaste and chalk are simple home remedies that can help with fine scratches. Apply a small amount of toothpaste or chalk to a soft cloth. Polish the scratch in a circular motion. Repeat the process until the scratch is barely visible.

This method is effective as the fine abrasive particles in the toothpaste gradually remove the scratch. Toothpaste should be white and without abrasive beads to achieve the best effect.

Ammonia solution

Mix 15 ml of ammonia with 750 ml of water. Apply the solution to the scratch with a soft cloth. Polish the area for a maximum of 30 seconds and then rinse off the solution with water.

Repeat the process if necessary. The ammonia solution acts as a mild abrasive and helps to remove minor damage. Make sure you wear gloves to protect your skin.

Baking soda and baking powder

Mix one tablespoon of baking soda or baking powder with one tablespoon of water until a smooth paste is formed. Apply the mixture with a soft cloth and polish the scratch in a circular motion. Repeat the process until the scratch has disappeared.

This paste is particularly suitable for scratches in thicker glass surfaces as it is gentle but effective. Baking soda and baking powder work in a similar way to toothpaste due to their abrasive properties.

Metal polish (containing cerium oxide)

Wrap a microfibre cloth around your finger and apply a small amount of metal polish. Polish the scratch in a circular motion for 30 to 40 seconds. Then rinse off the polish with water and repeat the process if necessary.

Metal polishes containing cerium oxide are particularly effective on glass as they contain stronger abrasive particles. This method is well suited for stubborn scratches that cannot be removed by simpler means.

Remove deep scratches in the glass with specialised cleaners

Glass ceramic cleaner

Glass ceramic cleaners are ideal for removing deep scratches from glass. Apply some glass ceramic cleaner to a microfibre cloth. Polish the scratch with gentle pressure in slow movements.

Rinse off the cleaner with lukewarm water. Repeat the process until the scratch is no longer visible. Glass ceramic cleaners contain special abrasives that can effectively remove deep scratches. These cleaners are actually intended for hob surfaces, but also work excellently on glass.

Polishing kits and repair kits

Polishing kits and repair kits are also an effective method. These kits usually contain a glass polish paste and a grinding or polishing attachment for the drill. Make sure that the kit is explicitly suitable for window glass.

The advantage of these kits is that they are specially designed for working on glass surfaces. They often deliver better results than simple home remedies. They are particularly useful if you want to treat larger areas or need to remove several scratches.

Use the BLUFIXX-Pro metal, glass and stone set to repair scratches. Thanks to the MGS replacement cartridges in six different colours, you can faithfully reproduce any surface and finish it afterwards.

Step-by-step instructions: Removing scratches from glass

Preparation and cleaning

Prepare the materials and tools and clean the affected area thoroughly. Do not use cleaning agents with abrasive particles. Use lint-free cloths and microfibre cloths to remove all residues.

Application of the selected method

Select the appropriate method for removing the scratch. Apply the professional glass polish to the affected area and polish the scratch in a circular motion. Be careful not to apply excessive pressure to avoid further damage. Repeat the process until the scratch is no longer visible.

Finishing and care

After treatment, you should clean the glass thoroughly and ensure that no polish residue remains. Finally, polish the glass surface with a soft cloth to give it a clear shine. Long-term care instructions are also important to avoid future scratches. Be sure to clean regularly and take appropriate protective measures.
